The Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is an international airport located in the municipality of Sigtuna, 42 kilometers north of Stockholm and 31 to the south of Uppsala. It is the largest airport in Sweden, one of the two most important connection centers of SAS ( Scandinavian Airlines System ), and one of the largest in Europe.
Stockholm-Arlanda serves as the main operating base for Nextjet , Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines and Skyways Express. The intercontinental destinations of Scandinavian Airlines are to Chicago and Newark, Air China to Beijing, United Airlines to Newark, Delta Air Lines and Norwegian Air Shuttle to New York-JFK, Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa, Qatar Airways to Doha, Thai Airways International to Bangkok and Norwegian Air Shuttle to Dubai. In addition, several charter airlines such as TUIfly Nordic, Novair, Primera Air and Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia offer direct services to various destinations, including outside Europe.
Arlanda Airport was used by close to 27 million passengers in 2018, with 21.2 million international passengers and 5.5 million domestic.
The airport was first used in 1959, but only for practice flights. In 1960 it was opened for general traffic, and in 1962 it was officially opened. The Arlanda International Airport has four terminals. Terminals 5 and 2 are used for international flights. Domestic flights are at terminals 3 and 4.
All international flights operated by SAS and its Star Alliance alliance partners use this new central building. A new building, Arlanda Sur, connect terminals 2, 3 and 4. Between terminals 4 and 5 there is a shopping center, Sky City, which also has a railroad stop. In addition, the Arlanda Express train, which connects Arlanda with the center of Stockholm has two stations at the airport.
The airport has a capacity of about 25 million passengers per year. The name of the airport, Arlanda, was chosen after the announcement of a contest prior to the opening of the airport. It is derived from Arland, a former name of the Ärlinghundra parish (now Husby-Ärlinghundra), where the airport is located. The final "a" was added in analogy with other Swedish place-names ending in "-landa", and also to make a pun with the Swedish verb "landa", which means "to land".
