The Malaysian airline Firefly, whose full name is FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd, was founded in 2007. The company is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, and its home base is Kuala Lumpur-Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport. Malaysia Airlines is the parent company. The first flight in April 2007 led from Penang to Kota Bharu (both Malaysian cities). Initially, the airline two Fokker 50 engines were available. By the end of 2008, the Fokker were replaced by ATR 72-500 aircraft. In the following years, other ATR 72 were acquired, so that the fleet in 2011 finally consisted of 20 aircraft of this type. Added to this was a Boeing 737-800.
In 2019 Firefly has a total of 12 ATR 72-500 aircraft and four ATR 72-600 aircraft. The subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines uses Kuala Lumpur Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport and Penang International Airport as hubs. Firefly considers it the most important task to be able to offer air services in the growth region, which, apart from Malaysia, includes Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. Corresponding flight routes are also on the airline's route network: The domestic flights include, inter alia, two times daily Kota Bharu and Kuantan. Three destinations in Thailand are served daily: Koh Samui. Krabi and Phuket. Other destinations are Singapore and four cities in Indonesia (Batam, Banda Aceh, Medan and Pekanbaru).
In total, there are ten national destinations and eight international. Firefly has planned the addition of the Malacca airport in Malacca as another base. This would be the basis for an expansion of the existing route network. Firefly is considered one of the cheapest airlines worldwide. As a provider of low-cost flights, the Malaysian airline does not differentiate between cabin classes: only Economy Class is available. Nevertheless, the service on board is often praised by the passengers. Firefly is not a member of an alliance, nor does it offer a frequent flyer program.
👜 Baggage regulations at Firefly
Firefly is a comparatively small airline only in Asia on the way, so the free baggage policies are quite consistent. In the cabin, one piece of hand luggage with a maximum weight of seven kilograms per passenger is allowed. This must not exceed the dimensions of 56 x 36 x 23 cm, as this is otherwise treated as checked baggage. If you are traveling within Asia, you can use a standardized piece of luggage weighing up to 20 kilograms. If 20 kilos are not enough, passengers can optionally book additional weight classes. So it is possible to increase the luggage transport to 25, 30 or even 35 kilograms. This is possible either online via the Firefly website, by phone or at the sales office, for example directly at the airport. Anyone who travels with small children may in any case take along appropriate baby carriages free of charge. It is important that the baby carriages are foldable. This airline tends to use smaller aircraft with relatively few seats. Firefly usually does not differentiate between different booking classes.
🕗 Firefly Web Check-in
The airline also offers the option of online check-in, for example, to reserve seats in advance and to reduce waiting times at the counter. However, this service is mainly available for domestic flights as well as flights from Singapore. The opening times for the web portal are: at the earliest 14 days or, in the case of code-share flights, 24 hours to one hour before the official departure time. Excluded are passengers with small children, passengers with reduced mobility or special care needs, and groups of more than nine.
