The Croatian airline Croatia Airlines (based in Zagreb) was founded in 1989 initially under the name Zagal - Zagreb Airlines. Its headquarters are in Buzin near Zagreb and operates domestic and international services mainly to European destinations. Its main hub is Franjo Tuđman Airport with focus cities being Dubrovnik, Split, and Zadar. Initially, these were cargo flights operated by the airline for UPS Airlines; Airplanes of the type Cessna 402 were used. The first democratic elections in the country brought in 1990 the renaming in Croatia Airlines. A leased Mc Donnell Douglas MD-82 established in 1991 the flight connection between the Airport Zagreb and Split. The Croatian war in 1992 resulted in a temporary closure of air traffic. After resuming operations, the company acquired three Boeing 737 aircraft and has since become a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The fleet was supplemented in 1993 by two more Boeing 737 aircraft and two ATR 42s. With the opening of several offices in Europe and, in particular, the acquisition of the travel agency Obzor, the company was able to offer a wide variety of travel. In 1998, Croatia Airlines became a member of the European Airlines Association (AEA). By and by more aircraft of different types were added and since 2004, the airline is also a member of the Star Alliance.
